Duckweed (Lemna Minor) - Alternative Food for Fish

Duckweed is kind of salviniales that can be found in rice field. It can grow lush in the less sunlight place in tropical area. The good thing, about duckweed is its composer which contains about 20- 41% of protein. In other words, duckweed can be alternative food for livestock, like fish and fowl. Here is the picture of duckweed.

I myself have tried to feed my fish with azolla mychrophylla and this duckweed, and the result shows that duckweed is a perfect alternative food for fish fingerlings because of its size which is smaller than azolla. My fishes are nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and gurami (Osphronemus goramy).

We had a small research of feeding our fish with duckweed, and the gurami fish has grown for more than 5 cm in two months. Here is the picture of our fishes that regularly eat duckweed.

Duckweed has a high productivity; which means that it grows so fast, especially if the duckweed fits the environment (18 - 33 degree Celcius). It will grow well in a tropical place with less sun light, because it can't take much heat.

If you are wondering what if your fish or chicken won't eat them, here's our trial video. We have tried to give the duckweed to our fish and chicken, and they all love it. A lot.
